Ladies,
I have a confession to make - I screwed up on the distance a bit today. Not by a lot, but a bit. As a result, the distance you ran was short of 800. I'm sorry about that. That's the bad news, and I thought I'd get that out of the way right away.
The good news is it doesn't matter. At all. You all gave a terrific effort, and the fire in your eyes as you ran those intervals was something that had been missing from many of you for some time. Finally, I saw a team of girls fired up to do some running. I debated telling you about the distance, but the truth is I can't have you guys going out at 5:30 pace in a race. You aren't going to hold that no matter what you do. That's faster than State record.
Here's more good news... I like what happened so much I think that's how we'll do them from now on. The distance doesn't matter, only your performance on the same distance over time. What that means is we'll want to see improvement in time as we do them. It'll translate as well as if we were doing 800s. On top of that, I think you guys were able to wrap your minds around being on the course better than being on the track.
This is the kind of effort we have to have. Intervals are no fun, everyone knows that. You still have to do them, and you have to do them hard. Thank the Lord you have the ability to work that hard. When you get older, trust me, you'll look back fondly and remember them, and you'll wish you could still do them.
Today I felt something I haven't in a while - a team excited to be out there. It felt good. Let's keep that going!
