Ladies,
*Public Service Announcement! I am going to be at the high school Friday morning at 6:30 AM for a short run. Since we are in the parade Friday afternoon, I don't feel there's any way we could practice in the afternoon, so... the optional Friday practice. That's right, optional, but... if you can be there, I highly recommend you be there. It's getting to that point in the season where we have to be careful about getting the miles regularly.*
You never cease to amaze me. I had a carefully crafted plan today, based it off the numbers we gained on Saturday, and felt it would be a pretty good start. One way or another, you fooled me.
Things have been going better with the weather, and it translates to easier running and faster times. Today wasn't the coolest it's been lately, but it was much cooler than last week's workout.
I set aggressive time goals, no question. With the Sectional only 5 weeks away, the time to get after it is NOW!
I'll let the numbers speak for themselves:
What do you think? It's insane what actually happened on the top two-thirds of the runners.
Danielle, Carrie, and Shelby beat the average I gave them by 6 seconds, remarkable in that it was an aggressive goal to begin with. This is also a 7 second improvement from last week's pace.
Alli blew the door off of it today. She topped the pace by 29 seconds. Alli made up her mind there wasn't going to be a gap between her and the other girls, and she didn't let it happen. That takes guts, and I respect that. Great job!
Chloe and Locki beat their pace by 6 seconds. It was a little rough early on, but they caught their stride and got back into it. Interestingly, same thing happened last week. Hmmm.
Bret didn't quite meet her pace, but it was close enough. Good work!
Diana didn't meet her pace, BUT she improved over last week's workout by 14 seconds per mile. Again, remember I was being aggressive.
Keeley improved from last week by 33 seconds per mile, a great gain. Still, she ran a race time that was roughly equivalent to the front three girls. I'll continue to push until she can keep up with them in practice - and then I'll push some more! ;)
I extrapolated out a potential 5k time from today's results, and understand, this is a possible 5k time. It's not likely for this meet this weekend; these would be year-end-after-taper type times. Did you notice we have four people that potentially could break the school record? Let me add that we will go to State if we could each be within one minute of those times. Let me reiterate: if the top five girls can come within one minute of the times I have listed above, the team will go to State. Dwell on that a bit.
Oh, I wanted to add something else I've noticed... there has been a marked uptick in the department of intra-squad competitiveness. To whit - Alli's decision to go with the top three in spite of the pace being 50 seconds per mile faster, and then holding it. That was tough! Or how about Chloe bearing down on her pace, keeping Locki at bay - and it was a fine piece of running leadership, I might add. Speaking of running leadership, Danielle did a wonderful job of taking the reins on the front, and on top of it denying Carrie the final kick Danielle knew would come. The beautiful part of this one, and I can't say enough about it, was she anticipated it perfectly. The second Carrie laid on the gas, Danielle responded. INSTANTLY! Listen, if you can cover Carrie's kick, you can cover anyone's kick. That was one smart piece of running. It's another example of why having girls around you that can kick your butt if you snooze for one second is the best thing that can happen to your personal racing.
I am also SO proud of you girls for keeping the competitiveness where it belongs - in the competition. Fight to win, but shake hands the second it's over. Resolve to win the next time if you didn't this time. Encourage the girl you just beat. Be a gracious winner.
The results of the captain vote are in. This year's captains are... Danielle and Alli. Congratulations girls, you've earned it!
