Crawford County Results

Ladies,

I wish I could tell you how we finished today. I can't. There was absolutely no way to calculate our results because of the nature of this race. With four different races run, then each team's top-5 runners' times totaled to give a time, how could any casual observer work it out? I'm not RainCoach, for cryin' out loud!

What I can do is compare our results with last year's. Guess what?

Didn't see that coming, did you? Neither did I. When you compare this year's team to last year's team, we are overall a faster team. Maybe only slightly so, but I think our potential upside is much greater because we have a lot of runners improving quickly. The trend is in our favor!

As for the racing, let's start with the freshmen/sophomore race. Carrie, Keeley, Morgan, and Diana all went out too fast. That's not surprising, in that none of them are truly experienced 5k runners. The splits from mile one to mile two varied a great deal, but there's a good reason; there are hills in the second and third miles. Don't get me wrong, I think Carrie's 6:25 and Keeley's 6:40 first miles were insane, but notice how they held even after that. Both girls put in superb efforts, if slightly slower than last week. This is not a matter of effort, rather pace. Speed work will fix that.

Morgan did a terrific job. Without more than 2 miles running all week prior to today, she held her own on a harder course than last week. Of course I'd rather have a healthy Morgan that would give us a triple threat in the freshmen class ( Carrie-Keeley-Morgan), but we can't have that. Our immediate concern is Conference, and we're on track to get healthy by then. After that, we'll look at time.

Diana has been sick, even missed practice yesterday, so for her to be anywhere near her time from last week is a miracle. Yes, we'll have to go faster, but at least we have the sick out of the way. Now on to training.

In the Junior/Senior race we had more or less a repeat of the first race, though at less severe a level. Shelby and Danielle both went slightly too fast, but held pretty evenly until the last tenth. I must say, we're going to have to work on that!

Chloe and Locki ran step-for-step until somewhere in the second mile, where Chloe had a severe cramp in her diaphragm. She stopped momentarily, Locki went on, but both finished strongly. Locki PR'd; Chloe wasn't far off hers. Check out Locki's final sprint - second only to Carrie! Also note how close her splits were. Very nice race, both girls.

Bret... I know you have a lot on your plate. It was a near-perfect first mile. You have to hang in there longer each race. Once you chop that stride down, you're finished, so don't! Keep an open stride, even if you slow down. You've taught yourself a very bad habit, and it will take concentration during every run to break it.

Now that we've been through everyone, look back at miles two and three for everyone. What do you notice? Yup, the splits are awfully darn close. Who cares? I do. Considering the last two miles were of similar difficulty, it's a sign your training is maturing when you can hold even splits like this late into the race. The big reason most of you had a significantly faster first mile was because the course was significantly easier the first mile. Had the course been as easy as, say, Brown County, I'm betting you could've taken another 20 seconds off today's time at least.

We'll know in a day or two how we compared to the rest of the teams, but let me confess a sigh of relief after this meet. In all my years of coaching high school girls, I've never seen a team handle a competition on a dance day as well as you girls did today. I'm sure I didn't have 100% of your focus, hard as you might have tried to hide it. Taken on the whole, I'm very pleased. I want more, but I'm pleased. For now. Briefly.

Ah, see you all Monday...
