Brown County Eagle Classic 2015

Ladies,

Great race today. No, seriously, this was a great day. Everyone on the team was on point and had great times. Let's look at that:

Sorry about the dropped splits there, folks, can't be everywhere at once.

Can't say enough for the effort out there. Only one person did not have a season's best, and that person has been hurt, so this is a great effort. Beyond that, the drops were huge.

I expected great runs today, but to help spur it on, I bought a shirt on a whim and offered it to the girl who dropped the most time from the last race. Of course that does mean any girl who did not run North Harrison was ineligible, but hey, never said it was perfectly thought out. Who won? Wait a bit.

The other thing I shared with the girls was the need to really go after it. This was especially true of the girls from 6-12, because in practice this is a pretty tight clump. There was a good chance any of these girls might rise up and have a shot at top-7. That put a lot of pressure on places 5 and 6 on the Varsity. As I told them, the JV have the benefit of knowing the times they had to beat.

So the Varsity ran, and I have to say I was pretty happy with what I saw. Everyone dropped big from last week's race, and that was good. Baili, Danielle, and Delaney all had PR's, and Sara was close. Carrie looked tough the whole way, Zoe is running tons better now, and Kate dropped a minute from last week. It looked good enough. Still there was the JV race.

Katlyn was the one with the most promise going in. Her workouts indicate a 22-23 runner if all went well. Sadly, it didn't. That's more because of her work ethic and how hard she's willing to push herself every day and how much pain she can take. The gist is eventually you break down, and her misfortune is today was that day. Her time was great - a full minute off North Harrison - but it wasn't the time she wanted. While I had a lot of fun talks post-race with girls today, my heart was breaking when I spoke to Katlyn. I knew it was a good time and a great building point for the rest of the season, but I also knew it was an impossible sell to her in that moment. She's tough, and she will get past this and laugh later one when her times are dropping again (and they will). It's still hard to watch.

On the other side - WOW! Two key moments are burned indelibly into my psyche - first was the glare in Ani's eyes when she ran by us at mile one. The other was seeing Molly come around that final turn first on the JV team for us today. I'm still wrapping my head around it. Those two girls are proof you never write anyone off, ever. Athletes always have the ability to turn the right screw and have massive improvements. Molly and Ani both did this. They also ran themselves into the top-7. The race was packed with ramifications for the future. Suddenly what seemed so certain and set is anything but. I have no idea how this is going to turn out.

Back to the T-shirt though... who won? Let me give you the chart, see for yourselves.

  1. I could based on her effort in the kickoff invite when rather than lay back behind her two teammates she passed them and was racing to the end. They passed her back, but the spirit and will had taken over and the skill will certainly follow with that attitude.
