Cutting It Close

Ladies,

We are coming to it in a hurry. This week is Crawford County Invite. Next week is Ted Fox. The week after is Conference. The week after is Sectional. Are you counting? That's three weeks until State Series. That's two weeks until taper.

This is the hard part. As much as we can hold it together the next two weeks, we have to try. I have some hard choices to make between now and then, and I promise you some of you aren't going to like it. I'm going to have to hold some girls out of races.

I know you hate that. I'm glad you do. You have to understand we cannot afford to lose another runner. Not. One. We need every available runner over the next month, and anyone we can rehabilitate. I'm in the process of mulling over the Conference 12, and it's a tough process. I want all 18 of you on it, but that's not going to happen. We knew it from the start. Now all of you have to fight for your spot. Further, you have to fight for your top-10 spot for State Series.

But... back to the races in the coming weeks. I will be holding some girls out this weekend. I like Crawford County, but it is not worth losing any of you. Let me put it this way... if you're not fit, you're not racing. I will let you know tomorrow who that is. Most of you can probably guess.

My hope is with a little rest most of the serious stuff will subside long enough to get to taper. The thing about racing is it's the hardest thing you can do to your body during the season. This is why I trimmed the schedule down to one race per week. We can all see now that one is plenty.

Now for those of you lucky enough to be healthy and on the rise, ride that momentum. You are coming through it on top and you will reap huge benefits from taper if you can hang in there. It hurts like crazy right now, but you can make it.

If everything froze right now, I could pretty much lock the top four places. After that, I have absolutely no idea who it will be. You may not believe me, but it could be any three of the remaining girls. We all saw what happened this last weekend. Do you think that's the last time a huge drop is going to happen this season? If you do, you're wrong. It's coming. I have my eye on a few in particular. However, if sports have taught me anything, it's that I don't know everything. Some wild stuff I can't predict is yet to happen.

A good number of you will be swimming tomorrow. The rest will run as usual. Make the most of whichever you do!
